What are the dark circles?
Dark circles appear as a dark shadow under the lower eyelid, generally caused by the presence of a trough which, under the effect of incident light, creates a shadow which is evident and unattractive.
This is an anatomical condition that is typical of the orbital area of the eye, where the skin is thin and the bone that constitutes the lower orbital border tends to become more evident with the passing of time due to the progressive reabsorption of the fat in this area, so that the skin and the infraorbital and zigomatic adipose tissues relax and slip downwards. In some cases the dark circles can even be present at an early age, or can be accentuated by a particular darker pigmentation with respect to the surrounding skin. Often, moreover, the dark circles are accompanied by the presence of bags of the eyelids, which make the dark circles even more apparent.
Treatment of dark circles
In the presence of concurrent bags of the lower eyelids, the surgical treatment consists of lower blepharoplasty with the transposition of the fat: in this case the fat from the bags is not removed but mobilized and turned downwards to fill in the troughs. Where there is no need to remove the bags, a fat transplant enables us to fill in the dark circles in an effective way: the fat is harvested using a mini liposuction, it is treated and lastly injected into the area below the eyelid in a uniform way until the hollow caused by the dark circles is filled in.
Filling in the trough of the dark circles can be achieved much more simply by using hyaluronic acid based fillers, which enable us to obtain a result which is absolutely analogous to what we achieve by transplanting fat without the need to resort to the operating theatre. To reach the required result we often need various sessions but then the results last for a really long time (2-3 years). The treatment of this area can give rise to some swelling in the following days and therefore it must be carried out very carefully, without any rushing to obtain an immediate result.
